Sports Authority opens 1st Puerto Rico store, in Ponce
The sporting goods store, located in Plaza del Caribe is the first of three locations the retailer will open in Puerto Rico.
Sports Authority, one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the mainland, marked its entrance into the Puerto Rican market Thursday with the grand opening of its flagship store in Ponce.
The sporting goods store, located in Plaza del Caribe, boasts 35,000 sq. ft. of retail space and features a wide assortment of quality sporting goods.
Sports Authority is dedicated to providing customers with “great values and great brand names,” such as Nike, Adidas, Puma, Columbia and more. Designed to appeal to the needs and taste of the Puerto Rican consumer, Sports Authority will offer a wide variety of equipment, apparel and footwear for the sports that are most commonly practiced by Puerto Ricans.
“We admire Puerto Rico’s sporting legacy of world-renowned athletes and the passion for sports from its players to fans,” said Michael E. Foss, CEO of Sports Authority. “We are excited to introduce the brand to a new market and look forward to providing great value and outstanding service to the families, athletes and fans in the Ponce community.”
Sports Authority has hired more than 70 employees for the Ponce store and will expand its hiring efforts next year in San Juan to support the opening of two additional stores — one of which is currently under construction at the Plaza Las Américas shopping center in Hato Rey.
To mark its grand opening, the sporting goods retailer will be giving away gift cards that range from $5 to $500 throughout the weekend. It is also hosting athlete appearances, including Olympic Medalist Javier Culson and former professional boxer Alex “Nene” Sánchez, among others.
