The Puerto Rico Statistics Institute is calling all entities involved in research and development activities to participate in the Science and Technology Research and Development Survey, which provides for the collection of data on R&D resources earmarked for the island, a key indicator of the knowledge economy, agency Executive Director Mario Marazzi said.

He urged all entities involved in R&D to complete the questionnaire the agency has published on its website as soon as possible, given that the agency will be collecting data through this month.

The survey covers investment in R&D projects in Puerto Rico, as well as human resources devoted to these projects, in the private sector, post-secondary education institutions, private nonprofits, and public sector entities.

“Make sure your institution participates in the ‘Puerto Rico Technology Survey 2012-13’,” said Marazzi. “It is important that the dimension of the efforts made in research and development companies, universities, nonprofit organizations and the public sector in Puerto Rico is known.”

“That commitment to innovation should be known,” said Marazzi, who also ensured that the survey data will be collected and handled in strict confidence.

To make comparisons with other countries, the Institute will use definitions and methodologies used in the rest of the world, as agreed in the Frascati Manual of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

This is the second time that the Science and Technology Research and Development Survey is conducted, after the first edition was released in 2011, so the results will analyze the changes in the last three years, Marazzi explained.
