T-Mobile pumping $35M into islandwide network

Jorge Martel

T-Mobile Puerto Rico will be investing $35 million in a series of projects to strengthen its islandwide network, including expanding the capacity of its 4G HSPA+ network, upgrading cell sites and begin construction on its next-generation Long Term Evolution infrastructure, General Manager Jorge Martel said Thursday.

During a news conference in Hato Rey, Martel said the wireless carrier has already boosted capacity for its 4G service at more than 40 cell sites that benefit a broad swath of the island: Aguas Buenas, Añasco, Arecibo, Bayamón, Cabo Rojo, Caguas, Camuy, Canóvanas, Carolina, Cayey, Cidra, Coamo, Comerío, Corozal, Dorado, Fajardo, Florida, Guánica, Guayama, Gurabo, Humacao, Isabela, Juncos, Lares, Maunabo, Mayagüez, Moca, Morovis, Naguabo, Orocovis, Peñuelas, Rincón, Río Grande, Sabana Grande, San Germán, San Juan, San Lorenzo, San Sebastián, Toa Baja, Trujillo Alto and Yauco.

Martel noted that some of these municipalities already had 4G coverage but will now have access to additional areas and capacity.

Thursday’s announcement comes just three months after the carrier unveiled plans to launch LTE in its major markets nationwide, including Puerto Rico. The network development should be completed by 2013.

“This investment, the strengthening and expansion of the 4G network and the early development of LTE demonstrates the commitment T-Mobile has with Puerto Rico thanks to the great reception that the consumer has with the brand, and to the more than 1,000 direct and indirect employees working in the company,” Martel said. “With this announcement, more consumers will enjoy more benefits, more speed in more places.”

Meanwhile, Martel took the opportunity to introduce the carrier’s latest smartphone, the highly anticipated HTC One S, the company’s first 4G device to ship with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and HTC Sense 4.

The device, which will be available Apr. 25, provides T-Mobile customers with an eight-megapixel camera, built-in Beats Audio technology, plus a diverse selection of apps and services that give customers a well-rounded package of features for on-the-go lifestyles.
