The University of Miami School of Business Administration announced Wednesday a new scholarship program to support participants in its Puerto Rico Executive MBA program. Scholarships ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 will be available to qualified individuals who are admitted to the class beginning in October 2013.

The level of award will be based on several factors including demonstrated need, previous academic experience, leadership potential, and continued availability of scholarship funds, the school said.

Applicants are encouraged to apply early to maximize their scholarship award.

“These new scholarships will open up this world-class MBA program to more executives and other professionals who desire to enhance their leadership skills and management expertise to advance their careers and, in turn, help grow Puerto Rico’s economy,” said Anuj Mehrotra, vice dean for graduate business programs at the School of Business Administration.

“The launch of the scholarship program demonstrates our continued commitment to Puerto Rico and to providing the management training that its businesses and other organizations need to compete successfully in today’s challenging business environment,” he said.

The Florida college has offered its Executive MBA program in Puerto Rico since 2009, with classes held each Saturday in San Juan. The same professors who teach on the school’s main campus in Miami fly to Puerto Rico each weekend to teach the classes there. With classes held locally and on Saturday, professionals living and working in Puerto Rico can earn the University of Miami MBA degree without interrupting their careers.

The Puerto Rico Executive MBA program is designed to enhance the general business, critical thinking, decision-making and strategic skills of business executives. Emphasis is placed on global management practices; global markets; understanding information, finance, and people; and leadership development. Classes are held at the Puerto Rico Manufacturers Association’s headquarters in San Juan.

The University of Miami Executive MBA program is currently ranked No. 31 among U.S. business schools by the Financial Times.
