Universal Insurance launches corporate university

Universal Group Inc. President Monique Miranda-Merle

Looking to establish a school where members of the insurance industry can seek training and professional development, Universal Insurance recently unveiled its “Universal University” concept, a $1.1 million corporate university open to the general public.

Upon opening its doors, the university has become the “first and only project dedicated to training and resource development for the insurance industry and related industries,” said Universal Group Inc. President Monique Miranda-Merle.

In addition to addressing the aspect of providing hands-on training, the college will offer professional development to members of the community as part of its social responsibility project, Miranda-Merle said, adding the university is a nonprofit venture run by the Luis Miranda Casañas Foundation, named after her father who founded Universal Group Inc. in 1998.

“For me, this is about following through with his legacy and his dream, supporting the development of the insurance industry and our island’s economic future,” Miranda-Merle said. “Our vision is to have an educational center for training and development as a strategic tool to promote learning in the insurance industry, as part of a corporate social responsibility and a commitment Universal has with the industry and society.”

The corporate university will take up 11,200 square feet of space at Universal’s Hato Rey offices. The nonprofit educational project has already struck alliances with other educational groups with similar training programs in place, including St, John’s University Universia, Edujur, Santander Universidades, Willis Re and the University of Puerto Rico.

During its start-up phase, Universal University will offer training courses, seminars, and insurance certifications, among other services.
