Walmart opens $31M Toa Baja Supercenter
The Supercenter becomes the 17th store the retailer has added to its chain since arriving to Puerto Rico in 1992.
With an investment of more than $31 million — and the creation of 500 new jobs — Walmart Puerto Rico this week celebrated the opening of its new Supercenter in the town of Toa Baja.

“With this opening we reaffirm our commitment to the island’s economic development by creating new jobs and supporting the sale of products harvested and manufactured in Puerto Rico,” said Jaime Fernández, regional general manager of Walmart Puerto Rico.
The 142,000 square-foot location accessible from Route 2 took six months to build. It features 700 parking spaces, all of Walmart’s traditional departments, a Banco Popular branch and a Panda Express.
In keeping with its commitment to sustainable development, the new Walmart is outfitted with high efficiency air conditioning and refrigeration units, controlled interior lighting, and low-water consumption toilets, among other eco-friendly features.
As part of the opening ceremony, Walmart presented donations to three nonprofit organizations in the area: battered women’s shelter Hogar Ruth; Niño Ave María Children’s home for abused children; and the Niños de Nueva Esperanza Project, which offers services to low-income communities.
