In-Brief

4 Catholic churches in Puerto Rico to be restored with $269K

Catholic Extension Society staff meets with Father Josué E. Colón-Claudio in front of the Parroquia y Santuario San Martín de Porres in Arecibo, one of the churches undergoing restoration.

A $269,586 investment is fueling the restoration of four Catholic churches in Arecibo and Lares as part of Puerto Rico’s ongoing recovery and reconstruction program for the Catholic Church. The work is expected to generate 38 direct jobs and 14 indirect jobs, supporting local economies while strengthening parish infrastructure.

The initiative, directed by the Catholic Extension Society along with the Church’s main recovery office in Puerto Rico, builds on efforts launched earlier this year at the San Juan Bautista Cathedral.

“This project seeks to repair the damage caused by Hurricane Maria and the passage of time, as well as strengthen infrastructure and create a safer and more welcoming environment for parishioners,” said Recovery Director Walmer Martínez.

Work in Arecibo, Lares
In Arecibo, the Parroquia y Santuario San Martín de Porres will undergo roof replacement, elastomeric painting, new lighting and windows, and interior repairs.

“The wait is over. I already told the community that — finally — the restoration has begun, and we are all very happy about it,” said Father Josué E. Colón-Claudio, parish priest, adding that the work is “the manifestation of unshakable faith and the commitment of Catholic Extension Society with our communities.”

The Capilla Santuario de los Milagros in Arecibo will see roof and wall repairs, bathroom renovations, fence restoration and electrical upgrades.

In Lares, the Capilla San Carlos will receive roof treatments, window sealing and painting to eliminate leaks, while the Capilla Santa María Goretti will benefit from new doors, windows and wall repairs to reinforce its structure.

Wider program
The projects are being managed by Ecoop Intl LLC, led by Hatillo entrepreneurs Eduardo Rivera and Kalet Torres. The firm is overseeing 16 churches in this phase, covering Arecibo, Hatillo, Lares and Quebradillas.

By the end of 2025, as many as 50 churches across Puerto Rico are expected to be under construction, with another 20 in the design stage. Over the next seven years, the recovery program aims to impact nearly 600 church properties, creating close to 7,000 jobs.

“We welcome with great enthusiasm the start of work in our temple and in all those that are part of this much-needed project,” Colón-Claudio said, inviting the Catholic community to join through participation and fundraising.
