Boquerón Brewing, ISER launch Erizo Black IPA for reefs
Boquerón Brewing Co. and ISER Caribe have partnered to launch Erizo, a Black IPA that connects Puerto Rico’s craft beer industry with marine conservation work.
The collaboration establishes a direct donation model in which a portion of each glass of Erizo sold supports coral reef restoration and scientific research on the island.
Beginning Dec. 18, every Erizo beer sold at Boquerón Brewing Co.’s facilities in Cabo Rojo will generate a contribution to ISER Caribe, a nonprofit organization focused on marine conservation. Founded in 2012, ISER Caribe is known for developing and managing Puerto Rico’s first terrestrial nurseries for marine organisms.
“Erizo represents a new model: how a company can generate economic value while promoting environmental conservation and scientific research,” said Braulio A. Quintero-Nazario, co-founder and CEO of ISER Caribe.
“This collaboration is an example of how business innovation can become an engine of social and environmental impact,” he said.
ISER Caribe carries out conservation initiatives through the Center for Research and Restoration of Marine Organisms, which operates in La Parguera and at the former Roosevelt Roads naval base in Ceiba.
Its work includes restoring coastal habitats and monitoring the health of coral reefs and species such as the black sea urchin, which plays a critical role in reef ecosystems.
Founded in 2011, Boquerón Brewing Co. was Puerto Rico’s first nano brewery. The company has built its brand around highlighting the island’s natural resources and cultural landmarks.
“We name our beers to highlight and promote Puerto Rico’s natural resources and tourist attractions. That’s what distinguishes us as a brand,” said Juan Carlos Torres-Monllor.
Erizo Black IPA has an alcohol content of 7.7%, adding a new option to the brewery’s lineup while contributing to a mission that extends beyond sales.
ISER Caribe said its work combines interdisciplinary research with community development, aiming to promote sustainability through a model that links environmental protection, scientific innovation and the empowerment of coastal communities.
