The College of Architects and Landscape Architects of Puerto Rico (CAAPPR, in Spanish) is hosting its 47th Annual Convention from June 5 to 7 at El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo, featuring a lineup of internationally recognized speakers and a focus on sustainability, resilient design and adaptive reuse.

Held under the theme “Beyond the Island: Design Strategies in Architecture and Landscape,” the event aims to connect Puerto Rico’s design community with global architectural and landscape practices.

“This convention is about breaking the boundaries of insularity,” organizers said in a statement.

Architect Jeff Brock of Moneo Brock, a multidisciplinary studio with offices in Madrid, New York and Monterrey, Mexico, will deliver the opening keynote, “Street Savvy,” on June 5 at 4:30 p.m. His talk will explore how architecture can foster convivial and health-focused urban environments through sustainable design strategies.

A graduate of Princeton and Columbia universities, Brock’s portfolio includes Columbia University’s NW Corner Building and the Parroquia de Pueblo Serena in Mexico.

The second keynote, “Existing Conditions,” will be presented June 6 at 3:30 p.m. by Carie Penabad and Adib Cúre of the Miami-based firm Cúre & Penabad. The architects will discuss recent projects that challenge conventional urban design and emphasize cultural specificity and community-oriented development.

The closing keynote, “Roots and Transformations: Landscapes from the Local Level,” will take place June 7 at 2:30 p.m. Verónica Rivera and Alejandro Vázquez of Field Operations will present their work integrating sustainability and urban life, with a focus on ecological connectivity and material use. Rivera, a graduate of the University of Puerto Rico, is currently leading landscape architecture projects in Oakland and Los Angeles.
