Chubb study shows rising demand for travel protection
A new study by Chubb reports that Puerto Rican travelers are placing greater weight on accident, illness and crime protection when selecting international travel insurance, even as many have yet to buy a policy.
The findings point to a growing awareness of the risks tied to family travel and overseas destinations, and the role coverage can play in reducing worry.
According to the survey, 83% of Puerto Ricans view accident protection as the most important feature of a travel insurance policy. Illness coverage follows at 60%, and 45% prioritize protection against crimes such as theft or assault.
Chubb said these preferences reflect the realities of traveling internationally, where unfamiliar environments and higher medical costs can increase the need for reliable protection.
“It’s essential to promote family protection as a priority. We know this is what most concerns Puerto Ricans when traveling, and travel insurance is an effective tool to offer them peace of mind and support in the event of any unforeseen circumstance,” said Judith Hernández, country president of Chubb Puerto Rico.
She added that the strong preference for accident, illness and crime coverage underscores why “travel insurance with hospital coverage becomes a clear necessity.”
The study also found that 32% of Puerto Ricans consider travel insurance necessary when traveling with family. This aligns with the finding that 67% identify lost luggage as the top travel risk, followed by accidents at 63% and crime at 53%.
Chubb said these concerns help explain why travel insurance is becoming part of trip planning, as policies offer access to professional support and assistance throughout a journey.
Despite this increased awareness, adoption remains limited. The report shows that 74% of Puerto Ricans have not purchased travel insurance in the past year. Still, 51% expressed interest in buying a policy, suggesting an upward trend in demand as travelers become more informed about the benefits.
Hernández said travel insurance should be seen as both a financial safeguard and a way to travel with less worry.
“Travel insurance is not only a tool for financial protection, but also a source of peace of mind,” she said. “Knowing you have support in case of the unexpected allows you to fully enjoy every experience, whether it’s a vacation or a business trip.”
The study’s key findings include:
- 32% consider travel insurance important when traveling with family.
- 83% prioritize accident coverage.
- 51% are interested in purchasing travel insurance.
- 63% fear having an accident while traveling.
- 74% have not purchased travel insurance in the last year.
The survey was conducted online with panelists older than 18 across nine Latin American markets, including Puerto Rico, totaling 3,150 respondents.
