DraftKings opens sportsbook at Foxwoods El San Juan Casino
DraftKings has opened a retail sportsbook at Foxwoods El San Juan Casino, expanding the company’s presence in Puerto Rico’s sports betting market.
The launch coincided with the casino’s fourth-anniversary celebration and included a ribbon-cutting ceremony and the ceremonial first bet placed by former New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada.
The opening is a collaboration among DraftKings, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and LionGrove, the owner and operator of Foxwoods El San Juan Casino.
DraftKings described the retail launch as its first step toward introducing an online sportsbook on the island, pending licensure and regulatory approval.
“Puerto Rico has an incredible sports culture and a deep connection to entertainment,” said Paul Liberman, president of operations at DraftKings. “We’re thrilled to bring our retail sportsbook to the Foxwoods El San Juan Casino and look forward to providing eligible customers with a fun, seamless and responsible way to engage with their favorite sports.”
The new sportsbook includes kiosks, an over-the-counter ticket window and a sports lounge. The casino, located inside the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel, has sought to expand its entertainment offerings since reopening under new ownership four years ago.
Rodney Butler, chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, said the sportsbook “marks another exciting milestone as we deliver new experiences to guests and sports fans in Puerto Rico.”
LionGrove founder and CEO Andro Nodarse-León said the addition strengthens the property’s position in the regional entertainment market.
“The opening of the DraftKings retail sportsbook further elevates the Foxwoods El San Juan Casino as a world-class entertainment destination and reinforces our commitment to creating exceptional experiences for guests from Puerto Rico and around the world,” he said.
DraftKings said Puerto Rico now joins the list of U.S. jurisdictions where it operates regulated sports betting, adding the island’s large sports fan base to its network.
