Aerostar unveils remodeled bathrooms at LMM Terminal A

The operator of Puerto Rico’s primary airport allocated more than $150,000 for this initial renovation project.

Aerostar Puerto Rico has launched the initial phase of its plan to remodel the bathrooms at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU, for its International Air Transport Association code), starting with a modernized concept for the sanitary facilities in Terminal A.

As part of its ongoing improvement efforts, the airport operator allocated more than $150,000 for this first renovation.

For the full reconstruction plan, covering all sanitary facilities across the airport, Aerostar estimates an investment of $7.5 million. The project will include a comprehensive overhaul of 26 bathrooms across Terminals A, B and C; the central security control area; the baggage claim area; and La Placita.

Aerostar President Jorge Hernández explained that the design for the Terminal A bathroom remodel prioritizes functionality and accommodates the significant passenger traffic the area receives.

“A modern, functional and water-efficient design was chosen. It also involved a sustainable approach in line with the mission to make the island’s main gateway … a green airport,” Hernández said.

The renovation incorporates a minimalist design with durable, long-lasting materials to withstand continuous use by millions of visitors. Features include efficient water-saving equipment, independent cubicles and dedicated areas for diaper changing, among other improvements.

“Our goal is to project modernism throughout all the areas that will be rehabilitated as part of our short- and medium-term plan,” Hernández added.

SJU is expected to surpass its passenger record this year, with projections exceeding 13 million travelers.

“All our reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts are aimed at continuing to adapt the airport’s facilities to passenger growth, the establishment of new bases for airline crews such as Jetblue and Frontier and other future projections,” Hernández noted.

He emphasized the importance of restrooms as critical passenger touchpoints: “Restrooms are one of the areas that have the greatest impact on passengers. Keeping them in optimal condition is one of the main challenges in the airport’s cleaning and maintenance plans.”
