Frappe maker La Frutera finds growth within Walmart
La Frutera has stores in Walmart Supercenters located in Santurce, Santa Isabel, Toa Baja, Carolina, Caguas, Canóvanas and two in Ponce.
The business relationship between local frappe maker La Frutera and Walmart Supercenters has helped the local chain find growth, as more than half of its sales, or 54 percent, are generated through its presence within the mega-retailer, company officials said.
La Frutera, a 100 percent Puerto Rican company dedicated to the production of smoothies with locally-grown fresh fruit, began as a fresh produce chain in 2005.
La Frutera stores in Walmart Supercenters employ nearly 50 people. Each month, the company uses 13,000 pounds of bananas, 21,500 pounds of pineapples, 11,000 pounds of cantaloupe, 15,500 pounds of papaya, 17,000 pounds of mango, and 850 gallons of sugarcane.
“I like knowing that, through my business, I contribute to the financial security and stability of Puerto Rican farmers, while being able to offer consumers a fresh, healthy, nutritious and high quality product,” agronomist Samuel Pérez, founder and owner of the frappe chain, who added that because eight of his 15 stores are in Walmart Supercenters, his company has significantly increased its distribution channels and sales volume.
Walmart’s Corporate Affairs Manager Viviana Mercado said through the business relationship that began in 2011, “we reaffirm our commitment to Puerto Rico’s economic development by strengthening the agro-food system and the creation of direct and indirect jobs.”
“Having La Frutera in our stores benefits us all, because, in addition to allowing us to strengthen our support for the growth of a local business and to contribute to the island’s economic activity, it offers us the opportunity to appeal to our customers with another local high-quality product they like,” she said.
