Federal funds boost 4 farmers’ markets in northwest Puerto Rico

The program supports coordination, operations, marketing and equipment for four farmers markets in Puerto Rico’s northwest region.

Four farmers markets in northwestern Puerto Rico are receiving federal support through the Mercados Noroeste program, which seeks to expand access to fresh produce while boosting economic opportunities for local agricultural producers.

The initiative, managed by the Hispanic-American Institute with funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service, supports markets in Aguadilla, Quebradillas, Isabela and Hatillo, serving about 47 farmers and value-added producers.

“This program allows us to expand our efforts to build food infrastructure for communities in the municipalities of the northwest region, increasing the number of direct farm-to-consumer sales points,” said Carlos M. Axtmayer-Fernández, program coordinator.

“Given the current situation, it is imperative to support our agricultural entrepreneurs and promote their products,” he said.

The program provides coordination, marketing and equipment support for participating markets. These include the Aguadilla Farmers Market, Mercadito 00678 in Quebradillas, Mercado Agrocosteño in Isabela and the Mercadillo Hatillo Flea Market, which has become a community gathering spot.

“Thanks to the support of Mercados Noroeste, the Flea Market has become a meeting point for the community, where knowledge about agriculture, environmental conservation and solid-waste reduction practices can be exchanged,” said Dariana Ojeda of the Museo del Reciclaje.

Julitza Nieves, representing the Aguadilla Farmers Market, said the support has helped professionalize operations.

“The impact we’ve had through our collaboration with Mercados Noroeste is reflected in increased and more effective promotion focused on producers, the necessary equipment to meet their needs and the professionalization of our team with uniforms,” she said.

The initiative also offers training through workshops on food safety and good agricultural practices, as well as technical assistance and equipment to improve processing.

Founded in 1997, the Hispanic-American Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes the social, educational and economic development of Hispanic communities in the United States and Latin America.
