Fondita de Jesús raises $85K for homeless services
La Fondita de Jesús raised $85,000 at its 14th annual Golf Tournament, marking a milestone year as the nonprofit celebrates four decades of service to homeless individuals and vulnerable families in Puerto Rico.
The unrestricted funds will support the organization’s daily operations and its network of community programs, which offer food, health services, housing support and crisis assistance.
Executive Director Geraldine Bayrón-Rivera thanked sponsors, participants and volunteers, noting that their support “sustains the daily operations of a mission that for 40 years has served our most vulnerable communities with excellence and dignity.”
She said the flexibility of the funds allows La Fondita “to strengthen our infrastructure, innovate, respond with agility and ensure the continuity of essential services.”
The tournament brought together 96 players on the Palm Course at Palmas Athletic Club in Humacao. During the awards ceremony, attendees heard from program participant Mimi Acevedo, who described how the organization helped her escape homelessness and rebuild her life.
Bayrón-Rivera also recognized the fundraising committee, citing its role in sustaining core services each year.
“It fills us with deep gratitude to see how businesses, corporate leaders and golf enthusiasts come together to support this tournament,” she said, adding that donations are managed with “integrity, transparency and commitment.”
Founded by volunteers 40 years ago, La Fondita has expanded into a multiservice organization offering meals, showers, clothing, recreation, transportation, psychosocial support and health services.
Its six homelessness-prevention programs operate primarily in the metro area and include two housing complexes — El Pueblito de Jesús and Los Robles — as well as a housing voucher program serving municipalities from San Juan to Loíza, Cidra, Gurabo and Toa Alta.
The organization also supports families with children who have lost or are at risk of losing their homes. Those interested in volunteering or contributing financially may contact the organization directly.
