GE Vernova has received an order for six LM2500XPRESS aeroderivative gas turbines to support electricity generation in Puerto Rico, according to a company statement.

The turbines will be installed at the Daguao, Jobos and Yabucoa power plants, which are operated by Genera PR under the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority. The new units are expected to provide about 244 megawatts (MW) of capacity.

Genera PR CEO Winnie Irizarry said the turbines will replace older equipment to improve service reliability during periods of high demand. “These plants are being equipped with new, more efficient generation units,” she said. “With GE Vernova’s aeroderivative solutions, we can feed in electricity quickly and flexibly at the request of the transmission grid operator and thus help stabilize the grid on the island.”

GE Vernova described the modular gas turbines as a “plug and play” solution that is 95% factory-assembled and designed for rapid installation. Based on aircraft engine technology, the aeroderivative turbines can reach full output in less than five minutes and are built to operate reliably with frequent starts and stops, according to the company.

Government officials said the gas turbines are intended to help stabilize the grid while Puerto Rico transitions to renewable energy. The island’s energy policy calls for 60% renewable generation by 2040 and 100% by 2050.

Each unit can generate up to 34 MW in simple cycle mode with 39.5% efficiency, or up to 47 MW in combined cycle mode with 54.4% efficiency, according to GE Vernova.

The order was placed in the second quarter of 2025. The turbines will be assembled at GE Vernova’s Manufacturing Excellence Center in Veresegyhaz, Hungary.

“GE Vernova is honored to support Puerto Rico with our advanced aeroderivative gas turbine technology to modernize their electric grid while increasing its capacity to meet growing demands,” said Dave Ross, CEO of GE Vernova’s Gas Power business in the Americas.

The company said the equipment is part of broader post-hurricane reconstruction and modernization efforts in Puerto Rico’s energy system.
