Gran Casino Viejo San Juan to open at Hotel Rumbao

Driftwood Capital and Grupo Orenes announced the upcoming opening of the Gran Casino Viejo San Juan, a 10,500-square-foot gaming venue at the Hotel Rumbao in Old San Juan.
The casino represents a $10.9 million investment and will feature 64 gaming machines, 10 tables and a sports bar. The project is expected to create 80 jobs.
Driftwood Capital, which purchased the Hotel Rumbao in October 2021, partnered with Grupo Orenes, an international operator with nearly six decades of experience in the gaming and leisure industry, to develop the project.
“We’re very excited to collaborate with Driftwood Capital in such a special location as Old San Juan. The Gran Casino Viejo San Juan will be a unique space, combining history, avant-garde and entertainment at its finest,” said Gregorio Hernández-Vélez, director of Grupo Orenes’ casino division.
Before becoming the Hotel Rumbao, the property operated as the Sheraton Old San Juan, which housed a casino until its closure in September 2015.
“The Hotel Rumbao and the Gran Casino Viejo San Juan are part of our commitment to the rebirth of Old San Juan as an epicenter of exclusive, high-value experiences,” said Carlos J. Rodríguez, chief executive of Driftwood Capital. “This collaboration with Grupo Orenes allows us to elevate Puerto Rico’s tourism offering and offer visitors a perfect combination of history, luxury and entertainment.”
The new casino, located at the former Latin Roots space behind the hotel, is scheduled to open in the coming months. Negotiations with Grupo Orenes were already underway in March 2024, when the hotel officially rebranded under Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio, as News is my Business reported.
