Hermanos Barreto invests $3M to rebuild Arecibo store

Comercial Hermanos Barreto in Arecibo, which reopened after a reconstruction project of more than $3 million.

Comercial Hermanos Barreto has reopened its Arecibo hardware store after completing more than $3 million in reconstruction work, marking a major milestone for the family-owned company following the fire that destroyed the facility in 2024.

The preopening event underscored the business’s recovery and the community support that enabled its return, company officials said.

“This new beginning is a testament to the strength of our people,” said Pablo Barreto, president of Comercial Hermanos Barreto. “Thanks to the unwavering support of our employees, suppliers and customers, today we can proudly say that we have come back stronger.”

The new 16,000-square-foot space was redesigned to improve customer flow and operations, with expanded areas, updated showrooms and upgraded technology.

Reconstruction generated 30 to 40 additional jobs, the company said, and the business kept all 27 Arecibo employees on payroll throughout the shutdown, providing full salaries and benefits.

Grupo Barreto, now led by the family’s second generation, operates hardware stores in Hatillo and Lares, Super Farmacias Corcovada, Casas Universales and the Barreto Best Blocks manufacturing plant. In total, the group supports more than 150 direct jobs and about 40 indirect positions across Puerto Rico.

The Arecibo store represents more than $3.5 million in annual purchases from local suppliers, reinforcing its role as a regional economic driver, executives said.

“What we’re celebrating today goes beyond reopening a store — it is proof that when a community stands together, there is no obstacle that cannot be overcome,” Barreto said.

The ceremony, led by brothers Pablo, Saúl, Edgardo and Axel Barreto, brought together suppliers, industry leaders and construction-sector representatives for tours, product demonstrations and a look back at the company’s nearly 40 years in business.

The event also highlighted the company’s long-standing support for schools, universities, sports programs and community initiatives.
