HSMAI Puerto Rico launches ROAR Awards program

Janid Ortiz, managing director of the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International Puerto Rico Chapter.

The Puerto Rico chapter of the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International has marked its third anniversary with the launch of the Annual ROAR Awards — short for Return on Amazing Results — a program designed to recognize excellence and innovation in the island’s hospitality industry.

The milestone was celebrated Sept. 18 at The Royal Sonesta San Juan, where industry leaders gathered to reflect on the chapter’s growth since its founding. Organizers presented the awards program as a platform to honor individuals and organizations reshaping Puerto Rico’s role in global hospitality.

A highlight of the event was the introduction of the Raúl Bustamante Industry Icon Award, a distinction honoring one of Puerto Rico’s most influential tourism executives. Bustamante, general manager of the Royal Sonesta San Juan and chairman of Discover Puerto Rico’s board, has spent more than four decades promoting the island as a travel destination.

His career includes senior posts at the Puerto Rico Hotel and Tourism Association, Caribe Hilton and Conrad Condado Plaza. He has been named “Hotelier of the Year” multiple times and is widely regarded as a mentor for future leaders.

“At HSMAI Puerto Rico, we take immense pride in celebrating the professionals who transform our industry with their dedication and talent,” said Janid Ortiz, managing director of HSMAI Puerto Rico. “Recognizing their ‘Return on Amazing Results’ is our way of applauding the excellence and commitment that make our island’s hospitality truly unique.”

Award categories will include The Closer, The Brand Whisperer, The Trendsetter, The ROI Rockstar, The Catalyst and The Experience Maker. Nominations will open soon, with further details to be announced by the association.
