Las Ruinas opens in Old San Juan, creating 50 new jobs
Las Ruinas Bathhouse & Gym has opened in Old San Juan, introducing a wellness space that blends global bathhouse traditions with modern fitness and spa amenities. The investment amount for the project was not disclosed.
The bathhouse, three years in reconstruction inside a historic building on Calle de la Cruz, will employ 50 staff members, most of them local. Founder Maxwell Khaghan, an entrepreneur and principal official executive of Aries Living, said the concept emerged from his search for a place that offered both physical recovery and deep relaxation.
“Nothing is a coincidence,” he said. “A few years ago, after a strenuous workout, I was looking for a place where I could enjoy a good sauna, relax and physically recover, and frankly, I couldn’t find one. That is where the idea was born to create the concept we are proudly and excitedly presenting today.”
Khaghan said the building’s original structure guided the design process.
“Our full intention and purpose were to discover its character and allow it to reveal itself little by little without interfering,” he said.
The resulting aesthetic is defined by exposed textures, natural materials and a restrained, earthy palette. Local artist and designer Nicole Colón led the design, describing the space as rooted in bohemian minimalism, terracotta tones, arches, wood elements and abundant natural light.
“Every detail was designed to elevate what was already there, without altering or manipulating its raw beauty, its purity,” she said. “The inspiration is deeply bohemian … where the past engages in dialogue with a contemporary relaxation experience.”
Visitors will have access to cold plunge pools at about 48°F, thermal bath rituals of approximately 100°F, a sauna, massage rooms and a smoothie bar focused on fresh and organic ingredients.
The bathhouse’s philosophy centers on “a contrast between movement and stillness — the same balance as life.”
General Manager Orson Salicetti said choosing Old San Juan was a deliberate decision.
“Because for its founder, Max, that element was nonnegotiable,” he said. The neighborhood’s colors, sounds, textures and history, he added, “reflect what Las Ruinas aspires to represent.”
“Las Ruinas Bathhouse & Gym will be open to all Puerto Ricans and visitors alike starting in December,” Salicetti said. “We are inclusive by nature and aspire to be the best-kept secret of all who pursue wellness and inner peace as their guiding star.”
