LMM installs $5M bridge to improve passenger access

The new bridge at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport will feature elevators and climate-controlled walkways connecting all levels of the parking garage to Terminal A.

Aerostar Puerto Rico, the private operator of Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU, for its airport code), announced a temporary closure at SJU to complete the installation of a new pedestrian bridge connecting the multistory parking garage with Terminal A. The $5 million project is intended to improve access and passenger flow.

The closure affects the exterior pickup lane on the first level of the arrivals area until Thursday night. During this period, drivers collecting passengers must use the covered center lane, which will remain open to maintain traffic flow.

Aerostar President Jorge Hernández said the bridge is “a long-awaited project that will provide greater comfort, accessibility and safety to our passengers.” He added that the structure is part of Aerostar’s ongoing investment plan for the airport.

The bridge will feature elevators and secure, climate-controlled walkways connecting all parking levels with Terminal A. Modeled after the existing bridge to Terminal B, it is being built with prefabricated modules to speed installation and reduce disruption.

“We know that any infrastructure project may involve temporary adjustments, but we are implementing the necessary measures to ensure traffic flow and passenger safety during this process,” Hernández said.

Aerostar said the project is part of a broader modernization and sustainability plan at the airport, including upgrades in renewable energy, technology and facilities to maintain its role as the island’s primary air gateway.
