The Puerto Rican ophthalmic lens manufacturer Lormar Optical Distributors Inc. is investing nearly $6.4 million to expand its operations and relocate from Caguas to a larger facility in Cayey. The move follows sustained growth and will boost the company’s technical and operational capacity, according to Sebastián Negrón-Reichard, secretary of the Economic Development and Commerce Department.

“Lormar Optical’s decision to continue its growth in Cayey reflects a business strategy focused on efficiency, quality and technical excellence,” Negrón-Reichard said. “This expansion showcases the potential of our regions to attract specialized industries and create quality jobs.”

Lormar will operate out of a 20,000-square-foot facility. The project will create 10 new jobs and retain 45 positions. It is expected to generate an annual payroll of $1.2 million.

Of the total investment, $3.7 million will go toward machinery and equipment and $2 million toward construction. DDEC is supporting the expansion with $758,903 from its Economic Incentives Fund.

Founded in 2011, Lormar is one of the few labs in Puerto Rico capable of completing the full ophthalmic lens manufacturing process, including cutting, polishing, treatment and assembly. The expansion will improve delivery times and increase design precision.

Negrón-Reichard said projects like Lormar’s align with Puerto Rico’s economic strategy of supporting precision manufacturing and strengthening local capital.

Company president Omar Rolón said the expansion affirms Lormar’s leadership in optical innovation.

“We have the only intelligent conveyor system in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, which allows us to guarantee quality, consistency and speed in our service,” Rolón said.

He added that the company is in phase two of its expansion, with phase three already designed and projected to meet future demand.

“We’re proud to have a workforce rooted in the central region of the island — a place that holds deep significance for my family,” he said. “We’re confident that we will continue to contribute to the economic development of Puerto Rico and continue to raise the quality of local manufacturing.”

The move supports the government’s strategy to decentralize industrial development and position municipalities like Cayey as key players in Puerto Rico’s manufacturing sector.
