Lyft enters Puerto Rico, opening new income opportunities for drivers

Lyft is officially launching rideshare services in Puerto Rico, offering residents and visitors a new transportation option while creating fresh earning opportunities for local drivers.
The company began accepting driver applications this week, marking its first expansion into the Puerto Rican market, although no official start date has been set.
“Puerto Rico drivers, opportunity is calling!” the company announced, inviting residents to “be among the first to pioneer Lyft’s expansion into Puerto Rico and experience a new way to drive, with flexible and transparent earning opportunities across the island.”
The service area will include major cities such as San Juan, Bayamón and Carolina, as well as tourist hubs like Rincón, Ceiba, Ponce and Cayey. Drivers who sign up now are eligible for a $250 bonus after completing 25 rides within their first 30 days.
Lyft offers upfront ride details, including estimated hourly rates, trip distance, pickup time and real-time demand. Safety features will include PIN verification, GPS location sharing, an in-app 911 button and soon, optional audio recording during rides.
Lyft will compete with Uber, which has operated in Puerto Rico since 2016, alongside other transportation options. The company said its entry aims to strengthen mobility and economic opportunity, stating: “We operate in partnership with the communities we serve, offering a unique opportunity for drivers to earn money and connect people in their areas.”
Customer support will be available 24/7 in Spanish and English. Lyft emphasized that drivers can set their own schedules and increase their income while providing transportation services across the island.
