New car sales in Puerto Rico declined sharply in June, with 8,528 units sold — down 20.83% from the same month last year, according to the United Group of Automobile Importers, known by its Spanish acronym GUIA (Grupo Unido de Importadores de Automóviles).

Cumulative sales for 2025 are down 4.49% compared with the same period in 2024.

Among the hardest-hit categories last month were subcompact and subcompact premium cars, which fell 61.48% year over year. Midsize and full-size sedans also posted steep losses, declining 36.78%.

Vans were the only vehicle segment to register significant growth, increasing 41.62% compared with June 2024.

“Over the past two months, we have observed a drop in auto demand due to local economic conditions and the broader uncertainty stemming from the current geopolitical context,” said José R. Ordeix, president of GUIA.

The retail channel recorded a modest decline of 2.2% in June, contributing to a cumulative decrease of 14.6% for the year. Fleet sales saw a deeper contraction, falling 24.6% last month and 54.7% year to date.

Founded in 2006, GUIA is a nonprofit organization that represents automobile importers in Puerto Rico and tracks market trends affecting the island’s automotive industry and economy.
