One Stop Career Center certifies workers to do construction work

The course combined classroom instruction and hands-on training in carpentry, masonry, gypsum board installation, plumbing and electrical work.

In response to growing demand for reconstruction and infrastructure work in Puerto Rico, the nonprofit One Stop Career Center has certified 18 participants who completed a technical construction course through its Avanzando 2 Good Jobs program.

The course, held in person in Humacao, covered 300 contact hours and combined classroom instruction with hands-on training in carpentry, masonry, gypsum board installation, plumbing and electrical work. Each participant was paired with a case manager for job-readiness support.

“Given the constant need for labor in the many projects being developed in Puerto Rico, we are committed to another educational effort that addresses these critical recruitment areas, while also giving our participants the opportunity to educate themselves and ultimately find jobs,” said Carmen Cosme-Pitre, executive director of One Stop Career Center.

She added that the program also helps students meet basic needs by providing up to $1,200 in uniforms and tools.

“This course not only provides them with tools to find employment but also motivates them to achieve their professional and personal goals,” Cosme-Pitre said.

The Avanzando 2 Good Jobs program offers free technical and job training focused on preparing workers for the construction sector.
