Orange Wednesday marks 10 years boosting local economy
Puerto Rico’s business community will celebrate the 10th anniversary of “Miércoles Naranja” (Orange Wednesday) on Nov. 26, as Empresarios por Puerto Rico once again activates its islandwide “Cómprale al de Aquí” (“Buy from Locals”) campaign encouraging consumers to prioritize local purchases during the holiday shopping season.
Thousands of participating businesses will offer special promotions or introduce new products as part of the effort, organizers said.
“Over the past decade, the ‘Cómprale al de Aquí’ campaign has been a movement of unity, commitment and hope,” said Elliot Pacheco-Beauchamp, president of Empresarios por Puerto Rico.
“Every dollar spent at a local business can quadruple its effect in Puerto Rico’s economy. This anniversary represents a decade of collaboration among entrepreneurs, government and citizens, proving that when we buy local we all win,” he said.
Organizers said the campaign continues to draw new sectors each year, ranging from service providers and manufacturers to government agencies that support micro-entrepreneurship.
One example is the Puerto Rico Lottery Bureau, which represents more than 4,000 traditional agents and 2,500 electronic lottery points of sale.
“Every small business that participates in this campaign represents a family that works with dedication and effort,” said Deputy Secretary Heidi Hernández-Olivo.
The Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC, in Spanish) will distribute a promotional template to nearly 2,000 small businesses in its programs to help them advertise seasonal offerings.
Municipalities are also participating. The town of Camuy highlighted its “Sabor a Camuy” (“Taste of Camuy)” monthly event, which supports small retailers and promotes local tourism. Mayor Gabriel “Gaby” Hernández said small businesses remain central to the town’s economic health.
“In Camuy, small businesses are an essential part of our economic engine, and we are proud to once again join this initiative that champions what is ours,” he said.
Cooperatives and local companies, including credit unions, insurers, wholesalers and retail chains, will also take part in the campaign’s 10th anniversary. Empresarios por Puerto Rico urged business owners to register online and encouraged consumers to wear orange in support.
