Pavas Creativas gives Puerto Rican straw hats a fashionable makeover

Entrepreneur Janet James has launched Pavas Creativas, a fashion concept that reinvents the traditional Puerto Rican straw hat, or “pava,” with bold colors and eclectic design elements.
The limited-edition line features decorated and personalized pavas — historically linked to the island’s rural and agricultural past — reimagined as fashion accessories for concerts, beach outings and everyday wear.
The hats are available in red, green or natural tones, with brushed finishes in white, gold or silver. They are adorned with a variety of materials, including ribbons, butterflies, recycled elements, rope, wooden beads and even masculine-themed accents. The line includes styles for both men and women.
“The impact of the residency of urban artist [Bad Bunny] has opened the way for new entrepreneurs who exalt Puerto Ricanness,” James said. “Until two months ago, the straw hats reminded us of the beloved Don Cholito or the sugar industry era. Today, it’s an essential element to complement an outfit for a concert, the beach or just to walk around.”
James, who has long favored colorful and unconventional fashion, said Pavas Creativas is the first step in a broader plan to launch future lines of clothing, jewelry and accessories made with recycled materials.
“Vintage clothing is fashionable, but I think much more can be done by recycling materials,” she said. “This opportunity had to come to boost that energy and creativity to finally put it into action.”
Custom orders are available through Pavas Creativas on Facebook and Instagram.
