Planta Solar to install energy hubs in 5 Puerto Rico communities

Planta Solar has been selected to install and maintain Energy Resilience Hubs in five Puerto Rico communities in 2025, strengthening access to reliable, community-owned solar power. The initiative, led by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC), targets some of the island’s most vulnerable areas.

The selection comes a few months after IREC opened the Request for Proposals for the project, as News is my Business reported.

The new hubs will be in Castañer (Lares), La Perla (San Juan), Quebrada Arenas (Caguas), Rubias (Yauco), and San Diego (Coamo). Each site will feature solar generation and battery storage to maintain electricity for essential services during outages caused by natural disasters or grid failure.

Planta Solar, a Puerto Rico-based company with nearly a decade of experience installing solar systems in community centers, homes, and public buildings, was selected by a review committee comprising IREC, University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus (known as RUM) representatives, and local leaders. The panel cited the company’s proven track record, strong installation timeline, and detailed maintenance plan.

“These projects are part of a long-term commitment to facilitate the growth of sustainable energy in Puerto Rico,” said Carlos Velázquez, IREC program director in Puerto Rico. “We trust that this work is a roadmap for replication in hundreds of other communities in need.”

This round of installations follows IREC’s 2024 launch of five similar hubs across the island. The 2025 effort is funded through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy and is expected to be completed by September.
