Javier D. Ferrer, CEO of Popular Inc.

Banco Popular de Puerto Rico has been named “Bank of the Year Puerto Rico 2025” by The Banker magazine, the 13th time the institution has received the designation.

The recognition highlights the bank’s financial performance, technological initiatives and customer-focused efforts during the award period.

The Banker’s Bank of the Year Awards evaluate financial institutions worldwide on profitability, competitive positioning and their ability to respond to economic and industry conditions.

According to the publication, award recipients demonstrate measurable progress and an ability to turn challenges into opportunities through innovation and operational strength.

In its submission, Popular emphasized its data-driven customer personalization framework, which the bank said is reshaping how it interacts with clients across channels. It also cited its cloud-first strategy, designed to support scalable innovation and strengthen fraud-mitigation systems.

Executives said these efforts have improved service quality and enhanced the banking experience for individual and commercial customers.

Javier D. Ferrer, president and CEO of Popular Inc., said the recognition affirms the institution’s long-term commitment to its clients.

This recognition reflects our commitment to being the bank of choice for Puerto Rico. We achieve this by prioritizing what matters most to our customers, embracing a high-performance culture, consistently exceeding expectations and earning customers’ trust every day,” he said.

Ferrer said Popular’s strategy pairs digital transformation with “the genuine human connection that our customers value,” allowing the bank to meet evolving needs through personalized services.

The Banker, founded in 1926 and published by The Financial Times, selects winners across regions including Africa, Asia-Pacific, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, North America and Western Europe. Now in its 27th year, the program is widely regarded as a benchmark for global banking performance.
