The Puerto Rico Ports Authority announced a nearly $1.2 million security modernization project at Rafael Hernández International Airport in Aguadilla.

Ports Authority Executive Director Norberto Negrón said the investment is intended to strengthen monitoring and resilience at one of the island’s busiest hubs for passengers and cargo.

“Rafael Hernández International Airport is the most important airport in the western part of our island and one with a large and constant flow of passengers and cargo,” Negrón said. “Since we arrived at the agency in January, we began a process of identifying alternatives to increase security throughout this facility.”

The first phase includes the installation of high-resolution internet protocol cameras powered by photovoltaic energy with backup batteries and inverters, along with a new monitoring center. The cameras can operate at night and run for up to 72 hours without external power.

The system will cover the airport’s main terminal, hangars 571, 573 and 579, buildings 403 and 404 used by FedEx, and facilities operated by Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico and Western Aviation Service Corp.

“This is a very important project for the Ports Authority, with an investment of nearly $1.2 million, focused on increasing security using the latest technological advances,” Negrón said.

Genesis Solar, Tech & Security is leading the installation, which is expected to be completed within 120 days.

Rafael Hernández International Airport features one of the Caribbean’s longest runways at 11,702 feet, capable of handling aircraft of any size for passenger or cargo transport.
