Puerto Rico allocates $63.1M in new incentives to strengthen agriculture

Puerto Rico Gov. Jenniffer González and Agriculture Secretary Josué E. Rivera over the weekend unveiled a $63.1 million incentive package for the 2026 fiscal year, adding new aid and raising support across agricultural sectors.
“Today, we announced more than $63 million in local funding to provide incentives to our farmers and increase their funding. We are reviewing the school curriculum to promote agricultural education in schools. I believe in our agriculture and I will defend it; these initiatives are just the beginning,” González said at the annual assembly of the Puerto Rico Farm Bureau.
The plan raises support for manure and fertilizers from $150 to $175 per cuerda (0.97 acres), increases aid for beef cattle purchases from $200 to $300 per head, expands the poultry program to cover smaller producers, and creates a new swine incentive of $100 per replacement sow, capped at $12,000.
Budget allocations include $10 million for general programs, $12.2 million for dairy, $33 million for wage subsidies and $7.9 million for permanent investment projects. Bonuses for farmworkers and coffee pickers remain in place.
“This is a budget that reflects action and commitment. Every increase, every new program, is a direct response to the needs our farmers have raised,” Rivera said.
Farmers may apply for incentives through Nov. 30, with outreach and training sessions planned to guide applicants.
