San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero-Lugo announced the approval of $15 million in federal funds under the Home Investment Partnerships – American Rescue Plan (HOME-ARP) initiative to implement the Property Acquisition Program, which the municipality says will expand the city’s supply of affordable housing and address the needs of families in vulnerable situations.

“This allocation reaffirms our commitment to the families who need the most support to achieve decent and safe housing,” Romero-Lugo said. “Every investment of this type represents a real opportunity for progress and human development. It fills us with pride that San Juan has excelled in a competitive and transparent process, demonstrating our administration’s ability to maximize the resources allocated and direct them to where they are needed most.”

Municipal officials said the Oct. 1 award notification, which confirmed San Juan was one of only seven projects selected out of 22 proposals across Puerto Rico, demonstrates the city’s technical capacity and competitiveness in securing federal resources that benefit residents.

Through the program, city officials said the municipality will acquire and rehabilitate abandoned or deteriorated properties for long-term rental to families and individuals, increasing affordable housing availability in the capital.

“This achievement is the result of responsible and coordinated work among our municipal agencies,” Romero-Lugo said. “We have shown that when managed with precision, transparency and social awareness, these resources become real tools for transformation. In San Juan, we continue to manage with vision and commitment to improve the quality of life of our residents.”

The Puerto Rico Housing Finance Administration distributed about $42 million in HOME-ARP funds across the island for affordable housing development, rental assistance, supportive services and nonprofit strengthening.
