San Juan commits $90M to streets, sidewalks upgrades

San Juan Mayor Miguel A. Romero has announced a new phase of the city’s “Tus calles al día” (“Your streets up to date”) and “Tus aceras al día” (“Your sidewalks up to date”) programs, with $90 million to be invested over the next four years to improve mobility, safety and accessibility.
“We’re about to begin the most ambitious sidewalk resurfacing and rehabilitation program in the history of the capital city,” Romero said.
“With these works we will ensure that each community, regardless of its size or location, has safe streets and accessible, inclusive sidewalks that reflect the progress of San Juan,” he said. “This effort is a continuous action and the result of an administration that complies.”
During his first term, Romero said more than $107 million was invested in the “Tus calles al día” program, leading to the repair and paving of 2,733 streets in 212 sectors across San Juan.
That work, completed over 47 months, was described by the mayor as the most ambitious repaving effort in the city’s history.
The second phase, “Tus calles al día 2.0,” will receive $40 million through 2028, with $10 million allocated this year. Communities scheduled for improvements include Cantera, Old San Juan, Olympic Village, Árbol Gordo, San Martín and several rural sectors.
Meanwhile, the “Tus aceras al día” project will have a $50 million budget over four years, with $20 million earmarked for this fiscal year.
The investment will cover the rehabilitation of 40,000 linear feet of sidewalks and the installation of about 1,335 ramps designed to meet accessibility standards.
“These projects not only respond to the rights of all citizens to have safe and accessible spaces, but they will also strengthen the local economy, generate jobs and foster a sustainable urban environment that responds to the challenges of climate change,” said Raúl García, director of the Department of Operations and Maintenance.
Romero said the city’s infrastructure strategy aims to reach every community.
“With ‘Tus calles al día’ and ‘Tus aceras al día,’ San Juan consolidates itself as a modern, safe and accessible city, where residents and visitors can travel with confidence and enjoy a better quality of life,” he said.
“Every street that is repaved, every sidewalk rehabilitated, and every community served will be a reminder of our commitment to the people,” he said.
City officials emphasized that the dual initiatives are intended not only to repair infrastructure but also to promote inclusive urban development and long-term resilience.
