SER marks 75 years with $1M gift to expand specialized care
SER de Puerto Rico marked its 75th anniversary by announcing an expansion of its specialized medical and rehabilitation services, supported by a $1 million donation from attorney and philanthropist Thomas J. Henry.
The organization said the contribution will strengthen its ability to deliver advanced care to children and adults by supporting the recruitment and retention of highly specialized physicians. The fields identified include fetal and neonatal neurology, adult neurology, neuroimmunology, physical medicine and sports rehabilitation, and pediatric rheumatology.
The investment follows a year of significant growth in service delivery. From November 2024 through October 2025, SER provided 61,367 services, a 15.5% increase compared with the previous year, according to the organization. Medical evaluations totaled 5,599, a 26.8% rise, while therapeutic services reached 54,638, up 13.3%.
During the same period, SER admitted 562 new participants, expanding access to care by 32.6%. The organization also reported a 30% reduction in therapy wait times, allowing patients and families to begin treatment sooner, when early intervention can be most effective.
As Puerto Rico’s only pediatric rehabilitation center, SER also serves adults with acquired conditions. The organization said growth supported by philanthropic investments has been accompanied by measurable improvements in mobility, communication and functional independence among participants across the island.
Founded in 1950, SER de Puerto Rico provides medical, therapeutic, educational and rehabilitation services to individuals with physical disabilities, neurodevelopmental conditions and autism spectrum disorders. It operates centers in San Juan, Ponce and Ceiba, along with a community outreach program that extends services throughout Puerto Rico.
SER said the anniversary milestone reflects its long-standing mission and its continued focus on expanding access to specialized care, now supported by new resources aimed at sustaining long-term service growth.
