USDA Puerto Rico Farm Service Agency Executive Director Juan Ortiz-Serbiá, announced that starting today, island farmers can enroll in the new dairy Margin Protection Program. The voluntary program, established by the 2014 Farm Bill, provides financial assistance to participating farmers when the margin — the difference between the price of milk and feed costs — falls below the coverage level selected by the farmer.
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced Wednesday that the agency is seeking applications for grants that will be awarded to organizations to provide critical financial and technical assistance to recipients to develop and strengthen their capacity to carry out housing, community facilities and community and economic development projects.
Puerto Rico farmers and ranchers still have time to apply for low interest 2014 loans available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency’s direct farm ownership program.
