Tres Monjitas unveils $35M expansion to grow Puerto Rico’s dairy sector

Upgraded bottling and distribution systems are central to Tres Monjitas’ long-term expansion plan as the company invests in modernizing its operations.

Tres Monjitas is moving ahead with its Route 2030 plan, a new expansion strategy backed by more than $35 million in investments over the next two years to strengthen Puerto Rico’s fresh milk market.

Combined with the $35.7 million invested since 2020, the company’s total outlay now exceeds $70 million, reflecting a broad modernization across facilities, fleets and production equipment.

The plan follows a year of rapid operational change after Tres Monjitas assumed responsibility for producing and distributing all fresh milk on the island following the closure of Suiza Dairy.

“We’re very proud of the work accomplished by our team and dairy farmers last year, when we suddenly assumed the responsibility of producing and distributing 100% of the fresh milk produced in Puerto Rico,” said Orlando González-Núñez, general manager of Tres Monjitas.

He said prior strategic investments “allowed us to respond to market changes quickly and in a structured way, given the circumstances.”

As part of Route 2030, the company will relocate its plastics production plant and open a new refrigerated storage facility with more than 22,000 square feet of capacity in Río Piedras, in facilities recently acquired by 2 Squared LLC, a joint venture between Power Group and Olein Corp.

The move frees space at the Hato Rey plant for expanded production, including the installation of a new 120-ounce filler and a small-package filler intended to increase output, the company said.

Tres Monjitas also plans to design a new cold storage facility in Hato Rey, a project expected to require more than $20 million in investment.

González said the road map is intended to support innovation and market growth while reinforcing the company’s long-standing role in the island’s dairy sector.

“Our greatest pride is that we know and love this dairy industry and that we are an agricultural company where the production of fresh milk and other dairy products represents 86% of everything we produce and sell,” he said. “This is our reason for being.”

The company has added 80 jobs during the past year as it adjusts its workforce to expanded operations.
