One year after announcing the start of construction of Puerto Rico’s largest solar farm in Guayama, AES Ilumina, LLC and government officials witnessed Monday the start of operations of the $96 million clean energy production project that will sell all of its output to the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
The public and private sectors have pumped more than $23 million into renewable and energy efficiency ventures in the Mayagüez region over the past three years, financing green energy projects for 2,344 homes and retroffiting of efficient lighting and air conditioning systems in area businesses, Energy Affairs Administration Interim Executive Director Juan Carlos Díaz said.
A group of Arecibo residents has gathered and submitted more than 1,500 signatures in favor of the proposed $500 million, 77-megawatt waste-to-energy plant project by Albany, NY-based Energy Answers International Inc. for the Cambalache sector of the northern Puerto Rico town.
