FirstBank sponsors youth golf clinic at Puerto Rico Open

FirstBank, in partnership with the Puerto Rico Golf Association, offered 17 youths from nonprofit organizations Crearte, Hogar Forjadores de Esperanza, and Juan Domingo en Acción the chance to participate in a golf clinic during the 2024 Puerto Rico Open.

The event included a clinic and an educational talk emphasizing the importance of early financial management.

“At FirstBank, we recognize that it’s never too early to start teaching children about the importance of responsible money management. Financial education should begin at a young age, so that children can develop positive financial habits and take control of their finances as they grow older. This way, they can achieve a solid and stable financial future in the long term,” said Magalys Camacho, director of human resources at FirstBank.

The participants also learned about golf from Puerto Rican María Fernanda “Marifé” Torres, a Ladies Professional Golf Association player, and other professional golfers.

“Being part of this golf clinic for children has been incredibly rewarding, as it allows me to educate them about the values that can be acquired through this sport. These values include discipline in attending training sessions, honesty (as the players fill out their own scorecards), and respect for others and opponents. Additionally, golf enables children to develop as individuals, demonstrating the importance of perseverance, teamwork and personal growth,” Torres said.

The clinic also aimed to build self-confidence, focus and resilience in children. Additionally, the event provided a fun experience and fostered camaraderie among participants, furthering FirstBank’s commitment to youth development through sports.
