IslandCorps to distribute 3,500 free furniture pieces to public schools

IslandCorps is bringing back its Free Teacher Pop-Up Store, “El Aula Libre,” to provide thousands of repurposed school furniture items at no cost to educators across Puerto Rico’s public school system.
The nonprofit, which supports child well-being through educational initiatives, will host the event from July 29 to Aug. 1 at the Dorado Agrotourism Park. Distribution for schools that pre-registered earlier this year will begin July 28, with general distribution open to all public schools starting the next day.
The initiative was made possible through the donation of six 40-foot containers holding 3,500 desks, chairs and bookshelves from Saint John’s School. Additional support came from Dueñas Trailers, the Puerto Rico Department of Education and the Municipality of Dorado.
IslandCorps stated that all furniture has been officially donated to the Department of Education and must be used exclusively for educational purposes.
“El Aula Libre is a tribute to the heart of our education system: the educators who, with dedication, inspire Puerto Rico’s future,” said Lulu Mayorga, executive director of IslandCorps.
To participate, schools must present proper documentation, including proof of active employment and a signed letter of need. They are also responsible for providing transportation and loading personnel.
The event encourages participation from parents and volunteers to help their schools retrieve the donated items.
