Las Vegas, Nevada-based GrowBLOX Sciences Inc., a biotechnology and research company, announced Tuesday it has opened a local subsidiary, GB Sciences Puerto Rico Inc. in anticipation of what it believes will be the legalization of medical marihuana on the island.

The subsidiary would be used as a distribution and exporting outlet for medical-grade marihuana products to the region, the company said in a release.

“GrowBLOX Sciences considers Puerto Rico to be a preeminent outlet to accomplish its objective by utilizing the company’s patent-pending proprietary indoor growing technology for commercial cultivation of medical-grade products,” the statement said.

The company — a research and biotechnical company that has developed proprietary indoor growing chambers specifically designed for medical cannabis cultivation — said it “sees opportunity” in the current debate on decriminalizing marihuana, legalizing medical marihuana, and allowing the territory to grow it, going on in the Legislature.

Since opening the subsidiary, Craig Ellins, CEO of GrowBLOX Sciences, has appointed attorney José A. Axtmayer as a member to the board and President of GB Sciences Puerto Rico Inc.
