Challenger Brass and Copper Inc., a Toa Baja company dedicated to the commercialization and distribution of copper, brass, bronze, stainless steels and aluminum, announced Monday plans to invest $1 million on equipment and machinery to establish a copper parts manufacturing line.
Telecommunications carrier Claro de Puerto Rico has reported 280 incidents of copper theft at its facilities this year — mostly along the island’s southwestern region — that not only cause service interruptions, but represent a safety risk as well. Last year, the company saw $4 million in losses related to the proliferation of the problem, company executives said.
Telecommunications Regulatory Board President Sandra Torres said the agency will continue cracking down on copper theft, including going after those who have recently taken up the habit of stealing manhole covers belonging to the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority.
