The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $46 million to Puerto Rico to help finance improvements to water projects that are essential to protecting public health and the environment. The funds will primarily be used to upgrade sewage plants and drinking water systems throughout the island.
Puerto Rico dairy producer Suiza Dairy has agreed to pay a penalty of $275,000 and invest some $3.75 million in plant upgrades to settle Clean Air Act violations, as per an agreement with the Department of Justice and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
A group of Arecibo residents has gathered and submitted more than 1,500 signatures in favor of the proposed $500 million, 77-megawatt waste-to-energy plant project by Albany, NY-based Energy Answers International Inc. for the Cambalache sector of the northern Puerto Rico town.
