Constructora Santiago II Corp., a federal construction contractor in San Juan, will make a lump sum payment of $40,000 to three female carpenters who were allegedly sexually harassed, retaliated against and denied regular and overtime work hours comparable to those of their male counterparts.
Puerto Rico Justice Secretary Luis Sánchez-Betances announced Tuesday that the island will receive more than $34,000 as part of an agreement between other states, territories, and the federal government and Kmart Corp. to settle allegations that Kmart submitted false claims and false statements through its Kmart Pharmacy Centers to the federal government, state governments, and territories for payments relating to partial fills of prescriptions.
Following an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division that found violations of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act’s overtime and record-keeping provisions, the commonwealth of Puerto Rico has agreed to pay more than $35 million in back wages and interest to 4,490 current and former employees of the territory’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
