Just as Puerto Rico businesses are starting to feel the pinch of a slowdown in merchandise imports in the wake of Horizon Lines’ exit from the market, maritime shipper Crowley announced Thursday the addition of a new flat-deck barge capable of carrying up to 400 loads.
Crowley Maritime Corp.’s liner services group announced Monday it will add flat deck barge to its South Atlantic Puerto Rico service in March, increasing the rotation between Jacksonville, Fla., and San Juan to four sailings each week.
Fifty-six years after it began offering cargo services between Puerto Rico and the U.S. mainland, Horizon Lines Inc. announced Tuesday that it would cease providing liner service by the end of 2014, citing “continuing losses without the prospect of future profitability.”
