Alemán to head Bankers Association

Aurelio Alemán

Aurelio Alemán, CEO of FirstBank, has been elected president of the Puerto Rico Bankers Association, effective July 1. The executive’s term extends through Sept. 30, 2012.

Also elected to the board were Javier Hidalgo, president of Santander Puerto Rico and Oriental CEO José Rafael Fernández, as vice president and treasurer, respectively.

“Puerto Rico’s economy needs a strong and healthy financial industry to contribute to Puerto Rico’s economic development,” said Alemán, who has been at the helm of FirstBank Puerto Rico since October 2009.

During his tenure at the professional association, Alemán vowed to place emphasis on “strengthening the banking industry, where about 17,000 Puerto Ricans work, continue to strengthen the relationship between the Association and other professional groups and further strengthen our community outreach.”

Alemán has 30 years of experience in banking, working for Citibank and Chace Manhattan Bank.
