European car dealership Euroclass Motors and Autos Vega, the island’s largest Ford Dealership, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Wednesday, News is my Business has learned.
Automaker Ford reported an increase in sales of 39 percent during the first quarter of 2011 in Puerto Rico, ranking second behind Toyota Puerto Rico, with 2,329 new units sold during the three-month period, Waldo Galán, general director of Ford International Business Development for Puerto Rico said Thursday.
It has yet to truly hit the road and it is already hitting some bumps, of the mechanical malfunctioning kind. The Nissan Leaf, the automaker’s first battery-powered sedan, which the local government chose earlier this year to launch an electric vehicle program on the island, has already shown signs of engine restart troubles, manufacturers in Japan said over the weekend.
Toyota vehicle sales on the island were brisk last month, when the company reportedly moved 2,081 units, or 20 percent more when compared to February 2010 sales, company officials said Monday.
Ford Motor Company is looking to increase its participation in the island’s automobile market to 13 percent this year, selling close to 10,000 units, said Waldo Galán, director of Ford Puerto Rico, on Wednesday.
