Econo renews ISO 22000 certification for service center
Econo Supermarkets’ Distribution and Service Center renewed its ISO 22000:2018 certification, reaffirming its adherence to international food safety and quality standards. The certification, issued by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance, will remain valid through 2029, company officials said.
ISO 22000:2018 establishes requirements for a food safety management system that ensures safe handling throughout every stage of the food chain, from production to consumption. By maintaining the certification, Econo continues to align its distribution practices with globally recognized standards.
“At Econo Supermarkets, we are proud to confirm that we have completed the audit required for ISO 22000:2018 recertification of our Distribution and Service Center. No findings were identified during the audit,” said Sharon León-Ortíz, quality director at Econo Supermarkets.
“This certification reinforces our commitment to Puerto Rico to continue investing in resources, talent and education that fosters continuous improvement,” she said.
The company said the certification strengthens its ability to provide safe food and services while meeting regulatory requirements. It cited benefits that include stronger controls over food safety activities, better communication throughout the supply chain and greater consumer confidence.
The certification covers the entire operation of Econo’s Distribution and Service Center, from the moment products arrive at the warehouse through their distribution to the chain’s 63 stores across Puerto Rico.
