El Mesón Sandwiches has opened its 44th restaurant and fourth in Mayagüez, following a $2.8 million investment.

The new location, on Highway 2 in the Sábalos area, spans 3,300 square feet, seats 78 customers, and offers 27 parking spaces along with a double drive-thru lane.

“We’re happy that Mayagüez can have a fourth Mesón, and with the chain’s most modern design, which includes a terrace and a double drive-thru lane,” said Felipe Pérez-Grajales, president of El Mesón Sandwiches.

The restaurant incorporates several sustainable and operational features, including a rainwater collection system with a 600-gallon capacity, lighting-control panels to maximize sunlight, a heater and solar panels, a 2,500-gallon cistern, and a reinforced oil and grease control system.

The new kitchen layout was designed to optimize service, while four interactive kiosks allow customers to order and pay without waiting in line.

The restaurant employs 60 people and began operations with an unannounced “soft opening” on June 13.

Looking ahead, Executive Vice President Gil Pérez-Grajales said the company plans three additional openings in 2026, including a freestanding restaurant with two drive-thru lanes in Orlando, Florida, and two locations in Puerto Rico’s metropolitan area.

“Our expansion plan should lead us to have 50 restaurants by the end of 2027,” he said.
