SBTDC launches HUB to strengthen local manufacturing

The Manufacturing HUB initiative will offer courses and seminars to help small and midsize manufacturers improve operations and access resources.

The Puerto Rico Small Business and Technology Development Center, in partnership with Inter American University and the U.S. Small Business Administration, has launched the Manufacturing HUB initiative to support small and midsize manufacturers across the island.

Through its 14 service centers, the program will function as a network of business development hubs offering training, advice and access to resources.

“We believe in the great potential that our entrepreneurs have to increase the manufacture of products made in Puerto Rico,” said Ivonne Negrón-Luciano, executive director of the center.

“Our business development expertise is available to help more companies plan their business models and make it easier for them to use the capital access guarantee programs offered by the SBA, as well as the economic incentives offered by the Department of Economic Development and Commerce and municipalities,” she said.

The initiative will deliver courses and seminars, in person and online, on topics including supply chain, continuous improvement, human resources, quality and process standardization.

“Many entrepreneurs are unaware of the aid that exists and that is what we are here for, to help them knock on these doors, and make sure they have access to the resources, capital and technical assistance necessary to succeed,” Negrón-Luciano said.

More than 70 business owners and support organizations attended the launch event, which included presentations and advice from local entrepreneurs who shared their experiences with incentives and challenges in the manufacturing sector.
