Gov. Alejandro García Padilla announced Tuesday the start of the sale of locally harvested rice marking the first time in three decades that Puerto Rico promotes the product commercially. It will be sold under the “Del País” institutional brand.
Agriculture Secretary Myrna Comas said during a Senate hearing Monday that Puerto Rico produces more than 1.2 million pounds of rice on about 350 acres of land as part of a Food Safety Plan launched by the current administration.
Sam’s Club announced Thursday it will begin selling Café Yaucono and Arroz Rico to its stores in Florida as part of its program to export Puerto Rican products to areas with a large community from the island.
Government officials celebrated Sunday the first successful harvest of rice in Puerto Rico in the last 30 years from seeds planted in the Lajas Valley in the summer.
The government of Puerto Rico will be investing $1.2 million to assist farmers in Lajas and Guánica to begin harvesting long-grain brown rice as part of a pilot project that should produce 6.5 million pounds of the grain by December.
